Postpartum Counseling
and Emotional Support
for Mothers
For the moments when becoming a mother feels quicker than you could catch up.
Lifting up mothers wherever they find themselves in the course of parenting
Motherhood shifts and reshapes you in ways that don’t end after the newborn stage. At Silver Compass Therapy, postpartum support extends into the wider landscape of parenting—through identity changes, emotional strain, lingering birth trauma, and the ongoing work of caring for a growing child. Whether you’re months or years past birth, therapy offers a steady, reflective space to understand what you’re carrying and feel more secure in your role as a mother.
What Postpartum Support Looks Like with Liz
Life after having a baby can feel different than you expected. Even when things are going “fine,” the emotional, physical, and relational shifts can be overwhelming. We offer counseling that supports the full range of experiences new and experienced mothers face — postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, intrusive thoughts, identity changes, relationship strain, and the quiet moments of uncertainty that often go unnamed.
Postpartum therapy is a place to slow down and make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface. Some women come in because they’re struggling; others come in because they feel disconnected, overstimulated, or unsure how to balance who they were with who they’re becoming. Whatever brings you here, we’ll provide steady support as you navigate the early months and years of motherhood.
Birth reshapes your life in ways that aren’t always visible.
Sleep deprivation, hormones, physical recovery, relationships, identity, and the constant demands of caring for a newborn can leave you feeling exhausted. Our approach blends clinical expertise with grounded, compassionate care, helping you understand your emotions, strengthen coping skills, and reconnect with yourself in a season that can feel both beautiful and confusing.
Our work is guided by four values that shape every session:
Understanding the emotional and relational context behind each woman’s experience
Education that reduces uncertainty and supports informed choices
Partnership that centers you as the expert on your own life
Perseverance that honors the resilience required to navigate early parenthood

Therapy That Honors Identity and Context
Postpartum is a time when identity, relationships, responsibilities, and daily rhythms can shift rapidly. Therapy considers the full context of new motherhood—your role as a parent, the demands of caring for a newborn, older children, changes in relationships, and the emotional landscape that emerges after birth. You are supported as a whole person, not reduced to symptoms or a diagnosis.

How Postpartum
Counseling Supports Your Adjustment to Motherhood
Clarity during an overwhelming transition
Postpartum counseling helps you make sense of the emotional shifts that follow birth including the unexpected waves of sadness or irritability. Therapy offers a steady place to sort through what feels confusing, heavy, or out of character.
Support for rebuilding your sense of self
Life with a baby can leave you feeling unfamiliar to yourself. Counseling helps you explore identity and physical changes, understand the impact of hormonal and lifestyle shifts, and reconnect with parts of yourself that may feel lost or muted in early motherhood.
Strengthened connection within your closest relationships
The postpartum period can strain communication, intimacy, and shared expectations. Therapy helps you navigate new dynamics with partners, family, and support systems so you feel more understood, supported, and aligned as you move through early parenthood together.
When Postpartum Connects to What Came Before
Many women find that postpartum feelings are influenced by earlier chapters of their reproductive journey, including the tone of pregnancy or the impact of miscarriage or other loss. If connecting these pieces feels helpful, you can revisit the sections on pregnancy or reproductive loss to better understand how earlier experiences may be shaping your postpartum emotions.
FAQ
-
It’s completely normal to begin postpartum therapy months after giving birth. Many women don’t recognize the full impact of the transition until routines settle, support shifts, or emotions become harder to manage. Therapy can be helpful at any point—early postpartum, months later, or even well into the first year—because the effects of birth, recovery, identity changes, and exhaustion often unfold over time.
-
Absolutely. Support for mothers with older infants, toddlers, and school‑age children is fully within our scope. We value working with mothers across all stages of parenting—not only those in early postpartum.
-
After having a baby, therapy can help with the emotional, relational, and identity changes that often surface in early postpartum. This includes mood symptoms, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, trauma responses, adjustment challenges, and the strain that sleep deprivation and new responsibilities place on daily life and partnerships. We can help you feel more grounded, centered, and connected to your life.
-
Yes. Trauma‑informed postpartum therapy can help you process what happened and understand how the birth is affecting you now. I use elements of narrative therapy to help you explore the story of your birth in a way that feels safe, structured, and manageable. Together, we focus on stabilization, meaning‑making, and reshaping the emotional impact of the experience.
-
Perinatal therapy is designed specifically for the changes that happen during pregnancy and postpartum with special attention given to the array of changes faced by women and mothers. We integrate reproductive mental health training and awareness of medical and hormonal factors that general therapy might not be skilled to offer.
-
No. Many women seek support simply because life’s hard! Your body, identity, role, and home environment are all changing, which is enough of a reason to talk about it. You do not need a diagnosis to benefit from therapy. If while working together we feel a diagnosis is appropriate we will figure it out together.
-
Your first session is a space to talk through what you’ve been experiencing and to get a feel for whether working with Silver Compass feels like the right match. You can expect to answer personal questions and open up about things you may not have shared before. Together, we’ll explore your concerns, clarify your goals, and start building an understanding of the context surrounding your reproductive journey.

All services are online through a HIPPA compliant telehealth platform. At this time we are only servicing individuals living in Massachusetts.
-
Of course! While you are encouraged to attend sessions free from distractions, we understand that life happens. Children, nursing newborns, pumping equipment, messy living rooms, are all welcome.

Silver Compass Therapy does not accept insurance, and this choice is intentional.
Working outside of insurance allows for greater privacy and control over your care. When insurance is involved, companies—and sometimes employers through benefits plans—can access diagnostic information, treatment dates, and other details about your mental health. By remaining out‑of‑network, your records stay between you and your therapist, not filtered through a third party.
This also creates more flexibility in treatment. Insurance companies often limit the number of sessions, require specific diagnoses, or dictate what “medically necessary” care looks like. Without those restrictions, therapy can move at the pace that truly fits your needs, focusing on what feels most important in your life and reproductive journey—not just what meets insurance criteria.
Let’s Talk About You
You pour so much of yourself into caring for your baby. This is a place where your needs matter too. Reach out and we’ll begin creating the kind of support that fits where you are right now.
