How Pregnancy Counseling Supports your Emotional Well-Being
Improved ability to cope and plan for the future
Pregnancy counseling helps you understand anxieties related to birth and motherhood. Sessions promote clarity and give you tools to manage uncertainty with more confidence and steadiness.
Clearer understanding of identity shifts
Preparing for motherhood reshapes your sense of self. Counseling offers space to explore identity changes, understand emerging emotions, and feel more grounded as your roles evolve.
Strengthened communication and connection in relationships
Talking through the changes that come with pregnancy makes it easier to navigate shifting dynamics with partners and extended family. Counseling clarifies expectations, strengthens communication, and helps everyone align around parenting values and priorities.
Honoring Your Story: Past Loss and Current Pregnancy
A new pregnancy after loss can bring forward memories of miscarriage or reproductive loss, shaping how you experience this season. Maternal mental health support offers a steady place to explore grief, anxiety, and hope as they coexist, honoring both your history and your present with compassion.
FAQ
-
Many women begin therapy when they notice uncomfortable or unmanageable emotions, or when they want support preparing for birth and postpartum. There’s no “right time” - therapy can be helpful at any point in pregnancy.
-
Whatever is at the forefront of your mind! Pregnancy counseling supports anxiety, intrusive thoughts, identity shifts, relationship changes, fear of birth, emotional overwhelm, and stress related to pregnancy. It also helps you prepare emotionally for postpartum and explore parenting values.
-
Perinatal therapy is designed specifically for the changes that happen during pregnancy and postpartum with special attention given to the array of changes faced by women and mothers. We integrate reproductive mental health training and awareness of medical and hormonal factors that general therapy might not be skilled to offer.
-
No. Many women seek support simply because life’s hard! Your body, identity, role, and home environment are all changing, which is enough of a reason to talk about it. You do not need a diagnosis to benefit from therapy. If while working together we feel a diagnosis is appropriate we will figure it out together.
-
Your first session is a space to talk through what you’ve been experiencing and to get a feel for whether working with Silver Compass feels like the right match. You can expect to answer personal questions and open up about things you may not have shared before. Together, we’ll explore your concerns, clarify your goals, and start building an understanding of the context surrounding your reproductive journey.
-
All services are online through a HIPPA compliant telehealth platform. At this time we are only servicing individuals living in Massachusetts.
-
Of course! While you are encouraged to attend sessions free from distractions, we understand that life happens. Children, nursing newborns, pumping equipment, messy living rooms, are all welcome.

Silver Compass Therapy does not accept insurance, and this choice is intentional.
Working outside of insurance allows for greater privacy and control over your care. When insurance is involved, companies—and sometimes employers through benefits plans—can access diagnostic information, treatment dates, and other details about your mental health. By remaining out‑of‑network, your records stay between you and your therapist, not filtered through a third party.
This also creates more flexibility in treatment. Insurance companies often limit the number of sessions, require specific diagnoses, or dictate what “medically necessary” care looks like. Without those restrictions, therapy can move at the pace that truly fits your needs, focusing on what feels most important in your life and reproductive journey—not just what meets insurance criteria.
-
Yes. Even in a healthy or uncomplicated pregnancy, therapy can support your emotional health and preparation for the postpartum period. You don’t need a crisis to benefit from talking things through.
-
Yes! Because we are out-of-network the red tape surrounding diagnosis and “medical necessity” are removed. Your desire to talk through things is valid and deserves attention.
-
My profession requires that I work within my scope of practice. I am experienced with working with individuals who have a history of anxiety, depression, OCD, and PMDD. It would be unethical for me to work with women who have a known history of postpartum psychosis, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, or eating disorders. They’re best supported by in person providers with supervised experience working with those specific populations.
-
Postpartum psychosis is very rare, affecting about 1–2 people per 1,000 births. It appears suddenly in the days or weeks after delivery. Most new parents will never experience it, and feeling worried right now is not a sign that you will. If concerns came up after birth, calling 911 or reaching out to a provider that specialises in postpartum psychosis is the safest and most effective step.
Silver Compass Therapy is trained in recognizing the warning signs of postpartum psychosis and knowledgeable on referral for appropriate care.
